Avoid accidents while driving around commercial trucks

On Behalf of | Jul 18, 2022 | Truck Accidents |

Commercial trucks, tractor trailers, semi-trucks and other large vehicles on the road are bigger and heavier than traditional passenger vehicles. Because of this, if they are involved in an accident, the resulting damages and injuries are usually much more severe.

While truck drivers need to take steps to keep others safe on the road, other drivers have this responsibility, too. Some tips to help you stay safe while driving around large, commercial trucks can be found here.

Stay aware of a truck’s blind spots

Commercial trucks don’t have rear-view mirrors. That’s because the trailer is too tall for them to see behind. Instead, they rely on side mirrors to see what is going on around them. This results in many more blind spots than a traditional passenger vehicle. Drivers have a hard time seeing on the sides of the trailer and any vehicles directly behind them. Knowing where these blind spots are can help you avoid driving in them.

Increase the distance between you

When driving around other vehicles, keeping a distance of a few car lengths is usually sufficient. However, with trucks, it’s smart to increase this distance. This is going to give you and the truck driver more time to react and stop in an emergency situation.

Pass carefully

If you are going to pass a large truck, make sure you pass quickly and don’t linger in a blind spot. If you don’t have the ability to get around the truck quickly, wait until you can.

Protecting your rights after a truck accident

If you are involved in a truck accident, you have rights. One right is to recover compensation from the at-fault party. Be sure to take time to gather evidence and get medical treatment right away, which will increase your ability to recover compensation.
