Steering wheels can cause devastating injuries

On Behalf of | Apr 13, 2022 | Car Accidents |

As you drive around, you utilize your steering wheel almost every second. Even on straighter roadways, you need to maintain a steady course.

During vehicular collisions, steering wheels can become dangerous hazards. Why is this the case?

Steering wheels protrude

When you’re driving, the steering wheel will be one of the closest components to your body. Depending on your seating position, the distance can vary, but it is always in close proximity. The amount of force generated during a crash is staggering, even in low-speed collisions. The impact will cause your whole body to jolt forward, and if your seatbelts or airbags fail, your head or chest will strike the steering wheel.

Head trauma after hitting the steering wheel can result in lacerations, concussions and even traumatic brain injuries. The extent of the injuries can vary, but all head injuries are medical emergencies.

If the steering wheel strikes your body, in particular your chest area, then your ribs could fracture. The rib cage acts as a protective shield for the heart, lungs and other vital organs. Without this, you could sustain internal bleeding, which is a threat to your life.

Wrist and arm injuries

During a collision, it is not uncommon for a driver to hold tightly onto the steering column, in an attempt to brace themselves. The force of the impact can travel all the way through your arms. In such a scenario, the wrists are susceptible to fractures, which can be extremely painful and may also require an extended recovery period.

If another vehicle has caused you to crash, then you may be able to hold the driver to account. The first step towards this is exploring your legal options in more detail.
