The severe danger of underride accidents

On Behalf of | Mar 16, 2022 | Truck Accidents |

Any time that you get involved in an accident with the semi-truck, if you’re not in that truck, you know that you’re facing increased risks. Smaller vehicles never fare well when they’re hit by larger vehicles, and the odds that you’ll be seriously injured are higher. This is a risk you simply have to understand if you share the road with these large vehicles.

That said, the type of accident you get involved in still makes a big difference in how serious this crash might be. One of the most dangerous types of accidents is known as an underride accident.

How do underride accidents happen?

An underride accident happens when a vehicle passes under the trailer being pulled by an 18-wheeler. There’s a big enough gap that many small passenger cars can fit below this trailer, at least partially, and they end up pinned below. This can happen in accidents to the side of the vehicle or to the rear, and many trucks actually now have safety bars put in place to prevent it from happening.

The risk of an underride accident is so much higher because the impact point for the bottom edge of that trailer is close to the chest and head of those in the car. This means it can lead to very traumatic injuries, and things like airbags may not help as much as they would in another type of crash.

Do you deserve compensation?

If you are facing high medical bills after severe injuries suffered in a truck accident, you need to know if you can seek financial compensation. This is also true if a loved one was involved in the crash and passed away.
