Forklifts are a valuable piece of equipment at many mining sites, but they can also cause serious injuries — and even death — if they aren’t operated properly. It is imperative that companies take the time to ensure that anyone who is going to use the forklift knows how to do so safely.

One of the most important things to remember is to watch everything going on around the forklift so that you don’t accidentally run over someone or pin them against anything. If you have to back up or cross pathways, use the horn to alert people around you to your intended action.

Another important thing to watch is your speed. There is a chance that you may tip the forklift over if you’re going too fast and try to turn. You also have to be careful not to go too fast when you’re going up and down steep grades since there is a risk of tumbling on these. Make sure you take the weight of the load into account when you’re trying to figure out the best way to go up and down a grade.

Parking the forklift must be done properly, especially if you’re parking on a grade. If this is the case, be sure that you block the wheels so that the forklift is secure. You don’t need it to become an unattended moving projectile that could cause injury.

Even when a forklift operator is being very careful, accidents might occur. The victims in these can have significant injuries that might require medical care. Workers’ compensation covers these visits, and it might provide partial wage replacement coverage if the injured worker is unable to return to work right away.
