How can I ensure safety when road tripping with kids?

Going on a summer road trip with your family can be a great bonding experience. You want to ensure the proper safety measures are in place in this case, which will protect your family and make for a more comfortable experience overall. Parents Magazine explains what you can do to prepare for your big excursion this summer.

Before setting out, make sure your vehicle is equipped with an emergency kit. An emergency kit can help you in case your vehicle breaks down and it takes a while for emergency services to arrive. Your kit should include items for your vehicle, such as jumper cables, flashlight, flares, and a tire jack in the event of a flat. You should also pack a first-aid kit, which can be helpful in the event of minor cuts and scrapes, as well as more serious injuries.

The backseat will be your kids’ home until you arrive at your destination. Much like in your own home, you want to make sure that the back seat is safe and free of hazards. Look for dangerous chemicals, such as washer fluid, or items that smaller kids can choke on. You also want to make sure your kids are secured within the backseat. Younger kids should be placed in effective car seats and properly strapped in. With older kids, make sure they’re wearing their seatbelts at all times.

When driving, be sure to break up your trip. While it’s natural that you want to make good time on your journey, rest breaks are crucial. Rest breaks ensure you’re prepared for each leg of your journey, which is a must to prevent fatigue from setting in. Taking breaks also help you stay alert behind the wheel and minimize distractions. Hungry kids in the backseat can pull your attention away from the road, and could cause an accident.
