What should I do after a hit and run?

On Behalf of | Sep 19, 2018 | Car Accidents |

A hit and run can be a lot more traumatic than a typical car accident. Even if you’re free from serious injury, you’ll still be faced with the stress of exorbitant repair bills that could be your financial responsibility if the other driver is not apprehended. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to improve your chances of receiving justice, as explained by State Farm.

Stay on the scene

Whatever you do, remain at the scene until law enforcement arrives. While you might be tempted to pursue the other driver, doing so can have negative consequences. For instance, you may be charged with a hit and run since leaving the scene for any reason other than to receive medical treatment is illegal. You might also endanger the lives of yourself and others if you’re traveling at high speeds.

Look for witnesses

When on the scene, look for any bystanders to get their take on what occurred. Witnesses offer an unbiased perspective on an accident, which can be very useful when filing a claim. Bystanders may also possess information you lack due to where they were standing when the accident happened. This information can be helpful to the police when tracking down the other party.

Take down information

You can also gather information on your own. For instance, things like a vehicle’s make, model, and color can be extremely useful. You can also provide the time and location when the accident occurred. If you have a portion of the license plate number, be sure to pass it along to the police. They may be able to use it during their investigation.
