Can you encourage your teen not to text and drive?

| Aug 7, 2018 | Car Accidents |

The urge to text and drive has probably been a temptation to you at some point or another. Whether or not you have given into that temptation is a personal choice, but you should be aware that choosing to use an electronic device behind the wheel can instantly put your own life and the life of many others at risk. Now that you have a teenager in your home, you are wondering if there are things you can do to encourage responsibility when they are old enough to drive in Alabama.

One of the most important things you can do is to have an open discussion with your child about the dangers of texting and driving. Familiarize yourself with the risks and do some research to have some statistics that you can readily share. Travelers Insurance suggests some other things you can do including leading by example. From the time your children are young, be a good example of responsible driving. When you are in the car, put your phone in a place where you are not distracted by incoming messages. If you absolutely have to respond to a call or text, pull over to a safe place and respond.

Another suggestion is to consider installing some type of monitoring device that allows you to see what your teenager is doing behind the wheel. If you catch him or her doing something dangerous, you can have a productive discussion about what changes can be made in the future.
