Learning to cope with a new disability

Most Alabama workers have long been aware of their employers' policies regarding workers' compensation. Many of those who have experienced injuries can manage temporary issues and overcome them within a reasonable timeframe.

Others, however, are not so fortunate. When an injury on the job results in permanent disability, the first question to come to mind typically involves financial security. How will bills be paid? When will an alternative employment opportunity arise? Some may wonder, how will the family receive support? These concerns exist in addition to the upsetting situation of dealing with a new disability.

Learning the Law

The Alabama Department of Labor provides a brochure on the state's workers' compensation laws, largely focusing on permanent total disability calculations. According to the Department, this type of disability has no limitations when it comes to amounts or lengths of time for payments. An employee who experiences these injuries may receive benefits for the remainder of his or her life under Alabama law. Permanent total disability constitutes as the inability to do any of the following: perform work duties, find other gainful employment, perform that employment with accommodations or become retrained for reasonable employment.

Learning to Cope

Getting a better grasp on state laws is one matter, but adjusting to life with a new disability is an entirely different process. Think Inclusive, a resource for inclusive education advocacy, shares an article on the topic of coping with disabilities and developing new strategies to overcome challenges. One major step in adjusting to a disability is finding proper accommodations and accepting them. The author of this post -- disabled himself -- goes on to note the importance of finding inspirational people, good listeners and allowing the rockiness of emotions to run its course. Most of all, finding the right tools to make life easier can make all the difference.
