America’s most common occupational illnesses and injuries

Virtually every job available across Alabama and the United States involves some degree of risk, but as you might expect, those who work in certain industries are more prone to particular types of workplace injuries than others. Even so, there are certain types of far-reaching on-the-job injuries affecting Americans more frequently than others. At the Sapp Law Firm, L.L.C., we have a firm understanding of the types of work-related injuries affecting today’s workforce, and we have helped many clients who suffered or developed on-the-job injuries or illnesses seek recourse.

According to, sprains, strains and tears are among the most prevalent types of injuries affecting American workers, accounting for just under 47 of about 10,000 reported workplace injuries in 2010. In many cases, such injuries resulted from workers overexerting themselves and not using proper lifting techniques, and about 36 percent of them involved the back. Some workers suffered strains, strains or tears within their shoulders, and these workers, on average, needed about 21 days out of work to recover.

Musculoskeletal disorders are also common among members of America’s workforce, and they are especially prevalent among those employed by the health care industry. Many workers who developed musculoskeletal disorders had pains and problems relating to carpal tunnel, their rotator cuffs and their backs. Overexertion, too, is a common occurrence for America’s employees, and overexertion-related injuries have become increasingly common in recent years.

Less-specific work-related pains are also common among American workers, with body pain accounting for more than 13 out of 10,000 documented work-related injuries and illnesses. On average, workers with general soreness and pain needed about 17 days away from work in order to effectively recover. More about work-related injuries and illnesses is available on our web page.
