Staying safe on the road during the holiday season

You face hazards anytime you travel down an Alabama roadway, but the holiday season is a particularly dangerous time for motorists, thanks to increased traffic, inclement weather conditions and drivers who get behind the wheel after drinking. At The Sapp Law Firm, L.L.C., we understand the unique circumstances that lead to an increase in holiday traffic accidents, and we have assisted many clients who were injured in accidents because of the actions of other drivers.

According to Edmunds.com, about 343 Americans lose their lives in traffic accidents every year during the three-day Christmas holiday, but New Year’s Eve is an even more dangerous time to be on the road. Over the three-day New Year’s Eve holiday, the nation sees an average of about 373 traffic deaths each year. Statistics show that many of these accidents are avoidable, with 94 percent of them caused by human error.

While there is only so much you can do to stay safe if other motorists choose to engage in dangerous driving behaviors, there are a number of steps you can take to lower your chances of becoming a holiday-season statistic. For starters, make sure your car is ready for winter weather. While Alabamans may not have the same snow concerns as those in, say, Colorado, winter still means more moisture on the roadway, highlighting the importance of having tires with enough tread. It is also a good idea to check your car battery and brake pads to avoid finding yourself stranded somewhere.

You can also enhance your odds of staying safe by avoiding the road after nightfall. Your risk of dying in a car crash is three times higher after dark than it is during the daylight. You are also less likely to experience fatigue during the daytime, which is another common cause of traffic accidents around the holidays and throughout the year.
