Types of elderly abuse

When many reflect on nursing homes in Alabama, medical treatment and rehabilitative care are likely among the first services to come to mind. However, nursing home neglect is an unfortunate but common occurrence in the industry of elder care. Laws prohibit such abuse, and those affected can take legal steps toward reaching justice and better care for loved ones.

The consequences of elder abuse in nursing homes can be immensely dangerous and potentially fatal. There are a number of warning signs that indicate a senior citizen may be experiencing neglect. While cases of nursing home neglect come with drastic legal repercussions, elder abuse, as a whole, is a largely hidden issue in America and world-wide.

The Facts

The Alabama Department of Human Resources gives a short fact list regarding adult abuse. Experts estimate that elder abuse is a painful reality for thousands of Alabama's elderly and disabled adults, and that the elderly population is rapidly growing. And while adult abuse occurs mostly within the walls of private homes, health care or social service providers may also abuse those in their care.

Types of Abuse

Experts urge those who have loved ones in nursing homes to look out for signs of abuse. Elder Abuse Reporting, a site providing various resources for those involved in elder care, provides a list of signs of elder abuse and neglect. Some include frequent arguments between the patient and caregiver and changes in personality or behavior in the elder. These signs are only an umbrella under which a multitude of other types of abuse can occur, including physical, emotional, sexual and financial abuse.
