Recent texting traffic death latest in series of road fatalities

A recent, fatal Cullman County crash is calling attention to the escalating number of traffic fatalities occurring on Alabama roadways. According to, authorities believe texting and driving was a likely factor in the accident that killed a 28-year-old woman and sent another motorist to the hospital with serious injuries.

The mid-afternoon accident occurred when the woman who lost her life in the incident struck another truck, leading to the woman’s death at the scene. Alabama State Troopers responded shortly after the crash occurred, but few other details about it are available, as it remains under investigation.

The incident follows another recent Cullman County crash that resulted in the deaths of two Alabamans after one of the involved drivers crossed over a center line, and WIAT reports that the number of traffic accidents and fatalities statewide have increased this year. To date in 2017, there have been more than 200 more crashes on Alabama roadways than there were by this time last year. Furthermore, 283 people have lost their lives in Alabama road accidents this year, while only 259 fatalities took place by this time last year.

Authorities attribute some of the crashes to the “100 days of summer,” a notoriously dangerous time to be on the road that starts on Memorial Day and continues through Labor Day. In addition to there being more inexperienced drivers on the road during this time, law enforcement officials believe many of these accidents are resulting from distracted driving, speeding and drivers following too closely behind other vehicles.
