Where are a commercial truck’s no-zones?

As someone who regularly drives Alabama’s roadways, you cannot help but encounter commercial trucks. If you are like many motorists, you may try and avoid driving around these massive, and massively heavy, vehicles as much as possible, but there are times when you have no choice but to share the road with them. Just as you have blind spots that make it tough to see certain areas outside your car while at the wheel, semi-truck drivers do, too. Knowing where they exist may help you learn to avoid or navigate around them.

Per the Trucker’s Report, a trucker’s blind spots are often called no-zones, and the implication is clear – you should try to avoid driving in them whenever you can. A truck driver has four no-zones, with two of them taking up much of the space on either side of the truck. Two other large no-zones exist directly in front of and behind the truck, so if you find yourself in any of these areas, there is a strong chance the truck driver cannot see you. A good rule of thumb is to look for the trucker’s mirrors, and if you cannot see them, assume the driver cannot see you.

To reduce the number of blind spot-related truck accidents, some trucking companies are investing in new equipment and technologies. Certain sensors can alert semi-truck drivers when another vehicle drifts into a no-zone, and simply adding more mirrors, too, can reduce the chance of a tragedy. Given the sheer size and weight of today’s trucks, however, these measures only go so far. Navigating around a hazard that suddenly appears while driving a passenger car is hard enough, but it can prove even more difficult to do so in time when commanding a commercial truck.

This information regarding trucker blind spots is educational, but it should not be a replacement for legal advice.
