Alabama’s auto boom poses risks for workers

If you are among the many residents working within Alabama’s burgeoning auto parts manufacturing industry, you may be well aware of the numerous stories emerging recently about safety issues, injuries and deaths at state manufacturing facilities. At the Sapp Law Firm, we have considerable experience representing Alabama employees and their families who are injured or killed on the job, and we have ample knowledge of how the state’s workers’ compensation system operates.

Per Bloomberg, safety violations at Alabama auto parts manufacturing plants are rampant. Statistics show that your likelihood of suffering illness or injury as an Alabama auto parts workers is 50 percent higher than it is for the nation’s auto parts workers, collectively. It is important to note, however, that the safety lapses appear to be specific to auto parts manufacturers across Alabama and the South, and that safety at actual auto manufacturing plants have been shown to be far superior.

If you work in this industry, you may be aware of the intense demands of the job, which often include working unreasonably long shifts with little training, and for little pay, in order to outsell competitors in Asia and Mexico. A recent case involving the death of a young worker at Alabama’s Ajin manufacturing plant placed an even more intense spotlight on the dangers associated with the state’s auto parts boom. The company was ordered to pay $2.5 million following the incident, and it was not the first time they faced fines for safety violations. Ajin was also recently fined by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration after eight workers suffered serious injuries to their fingers.
