Preparing for a group ride: Motorcycle safety

You have the opportunity to participate in literally hundreds of motorcycle events, rallies and activities in Alabama and across the United States every year. Part of the attraction of these is to get together with your fellow riders and share your love of everything motorcycle related. However, riding in a group requires some extra safety precautions. We at The Sapp Law Firm, L.L.C., understand the importance of vigilance and defensive techniques every motorcyclist needs to prevent crashes.

Before your group hits the road, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation notes that you should choose lead and sweep riders, and these operators should have group riding experience. If you have more than seven in your group, experts recommend that you split into two separate groups, each with their own lead and sweep riders.

Between the head and tail of the formation, your group should take a staggered or zig-zag formation so that any one rider can swerve to avoid a collision or road hazard without hitting one of the others. Everyone should know basic hand signals to communicate while on the road. Using these, you can warn each other of dangers, as well as indicating when a traffic situation warrants single or double file riding, when a rider needs to leave the roadway and other circumstances as they arise.

Each of you should have a cellphone for emergencies, and there should be at least one first-aid kit in the group. More information about the hazards motorcyclists face on the road is available on our web page.
