Riding in the rain: What motorcyclists should know

As the weather in Alabama gets nicer, you may be eager to get your motorcycle out of the garage and enjoy the sunshine. Along with the milder temperatures, spring also brings rain, and riding safely may be a challenge during inclement weather. At the Sapp Law Firm, L.L.C., we understand that motorcyclists are more susceptible to harm than motorists at the best of times. Even so, with a little preparation, you may be able to reduce your risk in inclement weather.

According to RideApart.com, you can adjust for the increased risk of a crash with the right gear. Every motorcyclist should always wear safety gear that covers exposed skin, including the hands. Gloves should provide you with more than the protection of padding, though. You need warm and dry hands to maintain full control of the motorcycle at all times.

A Department of Transportation-approved helmet may be the most important protection you can have. Seeing through the rain on the visor may be difficult, though, and some experts recommend an anti-fogging device and a yellow tint to improve vision. Being able to see is especially important when it rains because car drivers are also dealing with reduced visibility and increased braking time. So, you may need to perform evasive maneuvers to counter a negligent driver’s mistakes and prevent a motorcycle accident.

When careless, negligent or reckless drivers follow too closely in wet weather, it is especially dangerous for you on a motorcycle. Allowing other vehicles to pass is a good defense strategy. At traffic signals, flashing your brake lights is another way of alerting drivers to your presence. Even though rain can increase hazards when you ride, being prepared with a good defensive strategy can lower the risks and get you there safely.
