What is a long-term care ombudsman?

If you have a loved one living in a nursing home in Alabama, you may be wondering what resources you have to ensure that the care and security provided are adequate. The long-term care ombudsman is just such a resource. This person is an official who has been authorized to hear complaints about nursing home conditions, issues with staff and with other residents and investigate them.

Alcohol and driving skills

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, during 2013 there were 260 car accident fatalities in Alabama involving drunk drivers with a blood alcohol concentration at or over the limit of .08 percent. However, drivers with a BAC below the legal limit may also be putting others at risk on the state’s roadways. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that even one drink can cause driver impairment.

Auburn University testing the feasibility of truck platooning

You may have heard about the expectation that automated passenger vehicles may soon be seen on the roadways in Alabama. However, according to the American Trucking Association, there is similar technology for tractor trailers currently being tested by Auburn University in Alabama in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration and others. At the Sapp Law Firm, we look forward to learning the results of the research, which will determine if the trucks will reduce traffic and lower fuel costs without raising the risk of truck accidents.

Mining companies may be liable for conditions leading to CWP

Working in the coal extraction industry in Walker County, Alabama, can be a fulfilling occupation. However, WebMD warns that coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, or CWP, is a debilitating and even fatal occupational disease that anyone in that profession should be aware of. Miners who manufacture carbon black and carbon electrodes, those who work directly in the mines, and those who mill graphite are particularly at risk.
