What are the side-effects of COPD?

There are many underestimated risks that come along with working in an industrial environment. However, some of the most dangerous potential risks are the ones that relate to a worker's pulmonary health. Any ailment that has to do with the function of the lungs can be detrimental, especially chronic illnesses.

One chronic illness is commonly known as COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. As an occupational disease with a lot of risks and side effects, COPD is considered particularly dangerous. The American Thoracic Society has stated that it can result in additional aggravation-based illnesses forming, such as bronchitis or pneumonia, which can do even further damage to the lungs. The bacteria that sputum and irritant-filled lungs can grow can lead to bacterial infections as well, and it can damage the filtration system which means that a sufferer could be more prone to picking up airborne illnesses like viruses or different strains of flu.

In addition to that, COPD can lower the sufferer’s quality of life even without the risk of additional infections or illnesses. This is because it can cause extra sputum production, which can lead to constant feelings of breathlessness. Chronic coughing can also develop, which can be an irritant to both the sufferer and people around them. Additionally, fatigue may start to become a symptomatic issue, which is related to the depleted oxygen in the body.

On a whole, COPD is a disease that can affect any worker as long as the air in their working environment is bad. It can cause a number of unfortunate side effects and can be costly, so workers should be on the lookout for possible compensation if they are a COPD sufferer.
