What are the dangers of a side-impact collision?

The side-impact collision, also known as a T-bone or a broadside collision, is one of the most potentially damaging accidents that a driver can get into due to the location of the strike. Whether it takes place on the driver side or the passenger side, the angle of impact could end with the driver suffering from a number of short and long term injuries.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has shown that being injured in an auto accident can have lasting damage in a number of ways. This holds especially true for side-impact collisions, in which the side airbags may not deploy fully, or the driver or passenger may strike the metal frame in a place that the airbags do not reach. Side-impact collisions also come with the risk of the car rolling, which could result in the people within the car hitting the roof. Potential injury to brain and spinal cord areas are the ones that should be kept under careful watch.

However, there are many other injuries that a victim of a side-impact collision could face. These can include things as light as sprains or as crucial as broken or crushed bones. Spinal cord damage may occur, as well as brain damage or nerve damage. Severe external and internal bruising may also occur, along with concussions and lacerations. Disfigurement or amputations are also potential injuries, and a person may end up needing to have a limb removed in surgery later due to complications. Internal injuries can cause damage to organs that can’t be easily detected, as well.

While internal injuries are a little more difficult to detect, people who get into side-impact collisions should keep their attention on both the internal and external damage that they may receive. Tracking injuries is important not only for recovery, but for any potential legal situations that may arise later.
