How to avoid toxic substance injury in the workplace

Industrial workers face some peculiar challenges due to their work environment and its elevated dangers. Accidents involving toxic substances are just one of many issues that a worker should be prepared to handle. Fumes, particles and chemicals can all create unique dangers, and knowing what to do in an accident scenario could save a life.

For example, despite the fact that most work places follow their safety guidelines well, there is always the chance that an accident may still occur. Several different states and cities have come up with methods of handling these incidents, including the New York City Office of Emergency Management. When personal injury is a possibility in the event of an accident involving toxins, their suggestions include removing all clothing that has been contaminated as soon as possible, removing one's self from the scene, avoiding direct contact with material, staying upwind of substances, following decontamination procedures, and seeking professional medical attention.

However, it is best to do everything possible to prevent a workplace accident from happening in the first place. While not every method of prevention is foolproof, following proper safety protocol can drastically reduce the potential number of accidents. The United States Department of Labor states that the best ways to avoid potentially causing accidents include avoiding direct contact with materials, following lab protocol, having medical kits and commercially prepared kits on hand, wearing all safety covering at all necessary times, and protecting the eyes and nose.

Not all accidents can be prevented, but the impact of the accidents can be lessened greatly and personal injury can be avoided if these suggestions are applied to the workplace.
