Montgomery student hit by car after school

Now that school has started, drivers will need to be especially cautious when driving near school zones and anywhere that children are likely to be walking to and from their school or the bus. Many children, especially younger ones, lack the experience to make common sense decisions regarding crossing the street or even safely walking along the sidewalk. However, common car accident factors such as speeding or texting and driving can greatly increase the risks of any pedestrian being hit while walking along Alabama roadways.

These points were sadly driven home with a recent pedestrian accident involving a child near a Montgomery middle school. According to authorities, the boy attempted to cross the street after school when his light wasn’t green, and he was struck by an SUV. The boy was hospitalized in critical condition.

It’s true that in many instances, children can increase their risk of being struck by cars when they’re behaving irresponsibly around traffic, crossing on a red light or not crossing at a marked crosswalk. It’s especially for these reasons that drivers should take extra care when driving through school zones. Witnesses to the above accident expressed concerns over this particular area’s safety, saying the traffic was often heavy and there had been accidents before. In fact, the school district and the police department had recently instated pedestrian safety education programs and increased security around some school zones to keep children safe.

It’s not only important for parents and educators to teach children about traffic safety, but it’s crucial for drivers to understand that they can be sharing the road with a pedestrian at any time.
