Dementia patient allegedly abused by nursing home employee

When families in Jasper and elsewhere move elderly loved ones into nursing homes, it is often so that the person can get care they need but cannot receive at home. Most would never imagine that their loved one might be abused by one of the very employees charged with his or her care. Unfortunately, however, there are cases where patients at nursing care facilities suffer neglect or abuse at the hands of one of their caregivers.

A dementia patient at an elder care facility in Pennsylvania was allegedly abused by one of the nursing home employees in June of 2013. The patient reportedly claimed that a female worker grabbed her by the arms, which left her bruised, and put a pillow over her face. It was not disclosed what caused the altercation between the women. While in some cases dementia may prevent a person from reporting abuse or neglect, it was reported that the patient in this case was able to recall events, as well as identify employees at the facility.

The employee was charged with abuse recently after a lengthy investigation. For her part, she reportedly denied putting a pillow over the woman’s face and claimed she grabbed the patient to defend herself because the woman was attacking her.

It can be important for nursing home abuse and neglect to be reported in order to prevent future patients from also falling victim. Anyone who has been the victim of nursing home abuse or neglect, or who suspects a loved one may have been a victim, may consider consulting with an attorney to learn more about his or her rights and options for seeking appropriate compensation.
