A post-accident refresher course

Car accidents are an unfortunate reality on Alabama roads. Whether on residential streets, highways or freeways, a motor vehicle accident can happen anywhere. During the holiday season, additional special events and potential icy or other winter driving conditions can heighten concerns about an increase in auto accidents. With that in mind, getting a refresher on what to do after an accident can be helpful.

A recent media article provided such a reminder, knowing that people are knowingly upset in the wake of a crash, even if minor, and may not always think clearly. Remembering some basic things can dramatically help the post-accident process. One very helpful thing to do is to take as many photos of the accident scene and any vehicles involved as possible. The proliferation of smartphones today makes this relatively easy and can provide useful data if a lawsuit should ensue.

If any personal injury is even suspected, calling 911 to get help is always the first thing that should take place. An injury may seem minor at the time that an accident occurs but can too easily develop into a bigger problem later. Providing proper medical care should remain a priority. Filing a police report for all accidents, no matter how big or how small, should be done as well as this is a valuable part of any insurance claim.

No matter how elementary some advice may seem, getting a reminder now and then can help in the sometimes frantic moments after an accident. It may also be helpful to work with an attorney after a crash to make sure you are fully protected.
