Large truck fatalities on the rise

Alabama residents like others around the country are aware of the dangers of truck accidents. New regulations passed earlier this year by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association are designed to help reduce truck driver fatigue and, as a result, curb the rate of such accidents. A truck accident can result in serious injuries or fatalities very easily due to the size of the vehicles, especially when travelling on highways at high speeds.

A recent media article reported on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's statistics that indicate that 2012 was the third year in a row that had an increase in deaths resulting from a semi truck crash. In 2012, 3,921 people died as compared with 3,781 people the year before. That is a 3.7 percent increase overall. For the deaths in 2012, 72 percent of them occurred in the first quarter of the year. The year 2009 recorded the least amount of deaths from truck accidents with a total of 3,380.

The American Trucking Association does not agree with the NHTSA's statistics and believes that the information is presented in an incomplete or misrepresented manner. When talking about large trucks, there are many types of vehicles that can be classified as such, thereby affecting the overall information. Not all large trucks are semi-trucks, for example.

Regardless of the exact size or type of vehicle, a trucking accident can be serious. Anyone involved in such a collision could be best protected by obtaining help from an experienced attorney to ensure proper compensation.
