Explosions a common cause of fatal mining accidents

The mining industry provides people throughout central Alabama with a way to earn a living. Though this occupation can pay well, you likely also know that you face certain risks when on the job. Mining is labor-intensive and presents hazards that could easily result in your suffering serious work-related injuries.

Though coal mining deaths have dramatically decreased since the early part of the 20th century, too many individuals still suffer fatal injuries in the course of this occupation. The potential for dangerous gases in the ground and the use of explosives on the job often present the biggest risks for mining accidents.

Methane and coal dust

Explosive gas often becomes trapped between layers of coal deep within the ground. Because mining involves digging and extracting the coal, the Methane gas could easily ignite and cause an explosion. This type of incident could then result in coal dust igniting and causing additional explosions on the mining site. As a result, multiple workers could easily suffer serious or fatal injuries in such an incident.

In fact, such explosions have been the cause of the biggest mining disasters that have occurred throughout history. A 1906 accident in Europe caused by this type of explosion is considered one of the worst mining catastrophes in history, as it resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 miners.

Use of explosives

Because digging for coal is extremely difficult, explosives are sometimes used to break the rock and access the coal. However, for obvious reasons, the use of explosives is very hazardous, and a single mistake can cause a serious accident.

Many workers suffer serious injuries due to rocks hitting them after explosions. Additionally, premature blasts and misfires can result in severe injuries.

Obtaining compensation
