Hundreds Injured in Alabama Work Zone Wrecks in 2015

Drivers in the Jasper area are no strangers to road construction and maintenance. Whether you're traveling on I-22, I-65 or a state highway, you're likely to encounter a work zone at some point.

As part of National Work Zone Awareness Week, the Alabama Department of Transportation recently partnered with road builders and local officials to emphasize the importance of driving safely in work zones. The campaign is called "Don't Be That Driver!"

In 2015 there were 1,665 wrecks in Alabama work zones, resulting in 15 deaths and 475 injuries.

Speeding fines are doubled in Alabama work zones when workers are present. Still, many motorists are not deterred from speeding through hazardous construction areas, putting their own lives and the lives of workers at risk.

In fact, national statistics show that drivers and passengers make up 80 percent of the people who are killed in work zone crashes.

ALDOT reports that driver distraction and speeding are the top two causes of wrecks in work zones.

Every construction zone accident is preventable, and drivers can take basic precautions to avoid crashes. As we discussed in a recent post, drivers can pledge to avoid distractions of any kind, including smartphone distractions such as texting, talking and emailing.

In general, ALDOT provides these safety tips for driving in a work zone:

  • Always be alert and look out for workers and signs indicating reduced speeds and narrowing lanes.
  • Slow down, as the speed of traffic can slow quickly or come to a complete stop within seconds.
  • Always avoid tailgating and ensure there is a safe distance between your vehicle and others at all times.
  • Merge as soon as possible after seeing the signs, and you can help ensure that traffic flows in a smooth and orderly fashion.

Victims of motor vehicle accidents deserve full and fair compensation.

If you have been injured in a highway or interstate collision, don't hesitate to speak with a personal injury attorney about your case. Insurance companies typically offer settlements that do not cover the full cost of a serious injury, and a personal injury lawyer can investigate your case and help you maximize the compensation you receive.
