New technology may improve safety in older vehicles

People who are considering a new vehicle purchase in Alabama may be faced with an array of safety technology that manufacturers now include as standard or optional features. However, when a person owns an older vehicle that still performs well, the thought of buying a new one just to get the technology may not be appealing. Fortunately, the Washington Post points out that automakers are not the only source of equipment that can help prevent car accidents.

While modifying a vehicle’s existing computer and wiring systems may not be advisable, many companies are creating systems that mount to the dash independently. In addition to the navigational features that are already prevalent, the technology may include programs that can detect the lines on the road or objects in the vehicle’s path and provide alerts that help avoid collisions.

To lower the risk of distraction from these programs, some companies plan to produce devices that display images on the windshield in front of the driver. This would allow a person to view images from a screen without taking eyes off the road. This feature is intended to promote safety by eliminating the potential for driver distraction.

According to Distraction.gov, using handheld devices increases the risk of motor vehicle crashes significantly. Anything that takes a person’s attention, eyes or hands away from the task of driving creates a hazard. Smartphone interactions typically involve a loss of both visual and mental focus, even when a driver is just trying to verify a location on a map.

Distracted driving is responsible for thousands of deaths every year. If new systems are successful, they may reduce the risk of driver distraction without the loss of the advantages of in-vehicle technology.
